Cairns / Far North – Carers Week Wrap Up
Six events were held in Cairns and surrounding areas. Throughout the week Carers Queensland staff along with staff from our partner agencies, traveled nearly 1000km to meet with carers to the north, south and west of Cairns.
In Cairns a luncheon was held at the Tjapukai Cultural Park where we not only enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, but also witnessed a performance of an ancient Dreamtime Story of the Djabugay people which told of the creation of their land.
Later in the week morning teas were held in Innisfail, Port Douglas and the Atherton Tablelands. We ended the week with a morning tea and equipment display in the small town of Herberton.
In the middle of the week we visited Mareeba and offered information about carer support services to shoppers at the local shopping centre.
A highlight this year was being able to distribute the “Today’s the Day” calendar. This calendar was put together specifically for carers of the Far North and not only includes photos either taken by carers or of carers, but also includes helpful information every month. We thank our local Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre for making the calendar possible.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the Queensland Government for their generous support and sponsorship of Carers Week in 2016.
